Rock lookouts
As an interesting feature of the beech forests, besides the preserved forest cover, you can also admire rock formations of various shapes and rock towers, rock lookouts providing romantic views of the surrounding landscape, waterfalls on mountain streams, as well as monuments commemorating various past events. Most of these attractions are located in an area that is a UNESCO natural monument.

The summit with a lookout is a dominant feature of the western part of the Jizera Mountain beech forests above Oldřichov v Hájích.

#2 Skalní hrad

In the place of today’s rock lookout there used to be a sentinel castle overseeing the road from Liberec to the Frýdlant region. A lookout point is located near the Oldřichovské bučiny discovery trail.

Situated on the edge of the northern slopes of the Jizera Mountains, not far from Ptačí kupy, this is one of the most famous rock lookouts from which you can see the Frýdlant region with Upper Lusatia in the distance.

The king of the rock lookouts is visible between the towers of the Hejnice Basilica. Thousands of pilgrims coming to see the Madonna of Hejnice have looked up to it for centuries and perhaps that is why a cross symbolising the hope of man was placed on the lookout.

The rock lookout with a perfect circular view lies on the western edge of Klínový vrch, a short ridge between the valleys of the Hájený Brook and Smědá in the Jizera Mountains.

The rock is situated in the northernmost projection of Frýdlantské cimbuří; according to local legend, the rocks are the remains of a ruined church and a treasure is hidden there.

The characteristic jagged rock formation got its name (“Frýdlant Battlements”) thanks to its resemblance to the battlements of Frýdlant Castle and Chateau. The group of rocks is located in the central part of Polední kameny.

“Noon Rocks” are the highest point of the Jizera Mountains beech forests, situated between the valley of Černý potok (Black Brook) and Bílý potok (White Brook). From the top, you can enjoy a full panoramic view of Frýdlantské cimbuří and the highest peaks of the Jizera Mountains.

An exceptional view of Hejnice and the rocky slopes of the Jizera Mountains is offered by the Poustevníkův kámen lookout on the top of Chatky. The place was a popular tourist destination in the past and there was also a forest theatre near the rock lookout.

Rock formations of the UNESCO natural monument area
Two rock towers, Gorila and Sněhulák (Gorilla, Snowman), are located near Oldřichovské sedlo, at the Oldřichovské bučiny discovery trail.

Halfway between the Polední kameny and Frýdlantské cimbuří lookout points, there is a rock formation called Půlený kámen (Halved Stone).
